Dr. Nieves comes to VESCONE after 22 years at Iowa State University where she taught clinical and didactic small animal surgery and dentistry to students, interns, and residents in the W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Her research interests while at ISU included upregulation of the host immune system to prevent cancer metastasis, evaluation of the mechanisms of growth of maxillofacial sutures, and various topics in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Nieves is trained in both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, but has a special interest in orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Nieves serves as a reviewer for Veterinary Therapeutics and the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association.

Among the diverse group of animals Dr. Nieves has rescued are: a Lab, a Rat Terrier, a Sheltie, two Fox Terrier Mixes, a Dachshund, an Australian Cattle-Red Healer Cross and a Speckled Gecko.
