Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes. How can you tell if it's a true emergency? Initial physical exam parameters and common emergencies will be discussed. Participants will leave understanding what shock is, how to tell if it is a true emergency both over the phone and once in the clinic and understand some common emergencies seen in general practice.

Dealing with the Emergency Patient

Surprise emergencies come in to every veterinary clinic. Owners are often upset and the situation can be chaotic. We will discuss the step-by-step process of what to do. How to recognize shock, dealing with the client, how to triage, catheter and fluid selection will all be discussed. This lecture is for any technician from beginner to advanced.

Peripheral IV Catheter Placement

Participants will learn how to choose the right over-the-needle intravenous catheter, what vein to select and how to place a peripheral IV catheter. Participants will get hands on experience by placing an IV catheter into a fake legs. Handouts will be provided. This is open to the veterinary community (veterinarians and technicians) and is approved for one hour of Massachusetts Veterinary Technician Association (MVTA) Continuing Education Credits.
